A US appeals court this week has decided to allow citizens to examine records on government eavesdropping and wire tapping of their mobile phones. The District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that police can be forced to disclose their wiretapping of cell phone calls if such eavesdropping was conducted without a warrant. This is especially true when the wiretaps supported a criminal conviction.
This decision could also force agents to reveal tapping on wireless laptops. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit with the appeals court, which ruled unanimously in their favor. The opinion was that forcing police to reveal these records would shed light on the scope of cell phone tracking by law enforcement and its effectiveness. This issue has become more pertinent following the 9/11 terrorist attacks as Congress expanded police authority on domestic spying.

Computer companies like Google are making moves into the mobile phones market space. Google's $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility this week has left three main players in the mobile phone space, and all three are computer companies.
Microsoft entered the fray earlier in 2011 with the purchase of Skype for $8.5 billion. These moves are an indication that the computer giants are willing to bet big on a mobile future. Of course, there are still other vendors in the mobile phone space but none are faring as well as the big three of Google, Microsoft and Apple. Nokia still holds onto a piece of the handset market, but it is rapidly turning into a commodity. In terms of revenue growth, software is the place to be. RIM, the maker of Blackberry, has experienced a reversal of fortune as well as it finds itself unable to compete with Android and iPhone devices.
